Chandigarh, Jan 16 (UNI) Punjab Congress legislator Savinder Singh Kathunangal today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions for suspending his conviction by the district and sessions judge, Amritsar, in a case of alleged forgery.

The sentence of three-year imprisonment awarded by the trial court on December 11 last year has already been suspended by the High Court on January 10 which also granted him bail in the case which has its origin in a ''clerical'' mistake, the petitioner's counsel submitted while pointing out that Kathunangal was neither a beneficiary nor related to any beneficiary of the land deal to which he had signed as a mere witness.

It was against this background that the petitioner was granted bail besides suspension of sentence, it was further argued.

Kathunangal, who represents Majitha constituency of Amritsar district in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, is a natural aspirant for re-nomination by the party but as per ruling of the apex court, he was barred from contesting unless the conviction was suspended, hence the present plea has been filed, the counsel added.

It was also submitted by the counsel that during his 40 long years of political career from sarpanch of the village to MLA there was nothing against him not even a daily diary report(DDR) as he had an unblemished record of public service.

After the preliminary hearing, Justice Ms Nirmal Yadav issued notice to the complainant Paramjit Kaur and others for January 19.
