One dead in BSF-BDR clash

Malda, Jan 16 (UNI) One person was killed and another seriously injured when a scuffle over cattle smuggling led to a exchange of fire between the BSF and Bangladesh Rifles(BDR) at Jamalpur border in South Dinajpur district today.

Police said the incident took place early in the morning when the Border Security Force opened fire at a cattle smuggler trying to cross the border with cows.

''The BDR counter fired which resulted in the gun battle,'' DIG(Malda) D V Saraswat and Commanding Officer of BSF's 115 battallion Brajesh Kumar said before rushing to the spot.

Mr Kumar said the victim was yet to be identified. The injured had been rushed to the nearby Balurghat hospital.

The situation in the area was tense, police said.

Till now 400 rounds of bullets had been exchanged between them, Mr Kumar added.
