New varities of chrysanthemum released in Punjab

Ludhiana, Jan 16 (UNI) Six new varieties of Chrysanthemum and two each of vegetables and fruits have been introduced for general cultivation in Punjab.

All these varities have been developed by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).

The Chrysanthemum varities that were released were -- Anmol, Royal Purple, Yellow Delight, Garden Beauty, Winter Queen and Autumn Joy. The two of vegetables were Punjab Nagina (Brinjal) and Punjab 89 (Peas) and those of fruits were Punjab Soft (pear) and Punjab Purple (grapes).

According to PAU Director of Extension Education N S Malhi, the new varieties had been approved by the Punjab State Variety Approval Committee in its meeting held recently. These varieties were recommended by Research Evaluation Committee of the University in December last.

Anmol variety of Chrysanthemum has bright yellow anemone type of flowers and is suitable for growing in pots. Royal purple variety has purplish pink anemone type of flowers, suitable for growing as pot culture.

Yellow Delight is an early flowering variety with bright yellow pompon type of flowers and is suitable as cut flower. Garden beauty chrysanthemum has maroon spoon type of flowers and is suitable as garden plant.

Winter Queen variety has pink spoon type of flowers and is suitable for growing in garden while Autumn Joy is early flowering, highly floriferous variety with pink decorative flowers and is suitable for cultivation in gardens.
