Lucknow, Jan 16: Researchers at the Industrial Toxicology ResearchCentre (ITRC) here have found that mango pulp could help cure prostratecancer.

The ITRC experts stumbled upon the discovery while researching the medicinal properties of the king of fruits, mango.

The scientists found that on being administered to mice effectedwith cancer, there was a drastic reduction of tumor cells in them.

The research team has attributed the anti-carcinogenic property of mango to chemical compound 'lupeol' found in the fruit.

Mango derives its anti-carcinogenic property from lupeol.

Arresting the growth of cancer cells, this compound can fight well against other health disorders, said ITRC.

Specific vitamins, organic acids, carbohydrates, and polyphenolspresent in lupeol give it the strength to fight several healthdisorders.

While the prostrate cancer is not easily detectable, the number ofprostrate cancer patients has risen considerably in the country. As thetreatment of prostrate has not been so successful by radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery, the ITRC team felt the need for working inthis domain.

According to the scientists, lupeol has a varied nature ofmedicinal properties. Experiments have proved that lupeol exhibitsstrong anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-malarial, andanti-diabetic properties.

Since the king of fruits is a natural way to fight the disease, scientis belive it will leave little side-effects on the patients.

The research would soon be carried on all varieties of mangoes found in Uttar Pradesh.
