Indonesian train derailment kills at least five
Jakarta, Jan 16: A carriage of a crowded Indonesian passengertrain plunged into a dry river bed on Java island on Tuesday, killingat least five people and injuring nearly 100, a police official said.
The accident happened before dawn about 11 km west of the town ofPurwokerto in Central Java. The train was heading to the capitalJakarta.
''Survivors said the train was very crowded and it stopped beforeone of the carriages derailed and toppled over,'' police officialDarkoni said by telephone.
Train crashes and other transport accidents are relativelyfrequent in the sprawling country, where infrastructure has strained tokeep pace with population and economic growth.
