Cold claims 3 more in UP; toll at 118

Lucknow, Jan 16 (UNI) The toll due to cold in Uttar Pradesh has reached a staggering figure of 118, following the death of three persons during the last 24 hours.

The spine-chilling cold wave conditions are sweeping through eastern Uttar Pradesh since last couple of days. In the absence of humidity, the dry weather would continue in UP.

Meanwhile, two persons died of cold in Mahoba, while one aged person died under Civil Lines police station area in Allahabad, reports said.

So far, 25 people have died of cold in Mahoba alone.

Mercury plummeted at night in Allahabad, Faizabad, Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra and Gorakhpur. Sultanpur at 3.3 degrees Celsius -- 6 degrees below normal -- was the coldest place in UP.

The tent city of Prayag recorded 3.5 degrees C, which was also 6 degrees below normal. The state capital recorded 5.4 degrees.

A report from Mahoba said dry icy winds lashed the state, making people shiver even during the day despite bright sunshine.

A report from Sangam, Allahabad said pilgrims had to face hardships as the Ardh Kumbh Mela administration did not make proper bonfire arrangements even on Makar Sankranti.

Meanwhile, fog continued to disturb train schedules. 4723/4724 Kalindi Express, 5003/5004 Chauri Chaura Express and Farukhabad Passenger have been suspended till January 31.

According to weatherman, mornings would continue to be foggy, while the minimum temperature might dip below 6 degrees.
