Tripura: Security on alert for Dalai Lama's visit

Agartala, Jan 15: Security has been beefed up in this capital cityas well as Sabroom in Tripura following Buddhist religious leader theDalai Lama's four-day visit to the state from tomorrow.

Police told UNI here today, that since the religious leader is aVVIP, Z-plus security will be provided to him during his visit to thestate during which he will participate in the laying of foundationsstone for Dhamma Dipa Buddhist Cultural Complex at Manubankul underSabroom sub-division in south district on Wednesday.

Besides the laying of foundation stone, he will take part in anumber of programmes. The Dalai Lama would also give speeches to theBuddhists at the Venuban Buddha Vihar here on the teaching onintroduction to Buddhism on Thursday.

Apart from this, the religious leader, the Noble Prize winner forhis Global Peace efforts, would deliver speech at a public gathering atthe Townhall here on the same day.

The Dalai Lama, who would arrive here from Kolkata tomorrow, wouldleave for Sabroom by Army Helicopter from the Airport as per theprogramme sent to the Chief Secretary by the External Affairs Lias onOffice at Dharmashala in Himachal Pradesh.

The religious leader will be back at the capital on Thursdayitself by helicopter after completion of all his programmes at Sabroom.

Besides, Z-plus category security, police, TSR jawans would bedeployed to maintain any untoward incident and police would be put onpatrolling duty and mobilise for the internal security, sources added.

The police officials, however, said that there is no threat fromunderground forces in the state as there was no movement of militantsin Sabroom sub-division area nowadays. ''As the Noble prize Laurete isa VVIP, we are not going to take any chance regarding his security,''officials informed.

The religious leader leaves here for Kolkata on January 19, sources added.
