RBI to circulate new Rs 2 coins shortly

Jammu, Jan 15 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will shortly put into circulation new Rs 2 coins with the theme 'Unity in Diversity', an official release said here today.

''The Ferritic Stainless Steel coins are circular in shape with millimeters diameter with a metal composition of 17 per cent chromium and 83 per cent iron,'' the release said.

The face of the coin has three portions.

''The central portion bears lion capitol of Ashoka pillar with legend -- Satyam Eva Jayate -- inscribed below and the prominent international numeral '2' indicating denomination while the top portion contains the year in international numerals,'' the release added.

The reverse face of the coin shows stylish representation of 'Unity in Diversity' defining a characteristic of India.

The coin is a legal tender as provided in the Coinage Act, 1906, it said adding that the existing Rs 2 coins would also continue to be a legal tender.
