LDF appeals govt to move SC against HC verdict

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 15 (UNI) The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala today asked the state government to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court against the Kerala High Court verdict quashing some sections of the Self Financing Professional Colleges Act.

Addressing reporters after the LDF meeting, its convenor Vaikom Vishwam told reporters that the government should try to ensure social justice and also conduct admissins to professional colleges on the basis of merit.

The LDF meeting also urged the government to hold talks with the self financing professional college managements to find an amicable solution to the issues connected with the admission, fees and reservation in these institutions.

As this year's admission was already in the pipe line, the government should ensure that the procedure was completed in time and the students did not face any difficulty during the procedure, he said.

''Though the HC has quashed some sections in the Act, still some powers are vested with the Entrance Commissioner regarding fees structure and the entrance,'' Mr Vishwam said adding the LDF believed that there could be transparency in the procedures and also asked the government to ensure it.

Regarding Higher Education in the state, he said the government should make sure that the Higher Education Council was functioning accordingly for improving the quality of higher education. He also said the state government should think of establishing a Technical University in the state.

On general education, he said the LDF wanted the government to revise the syllabus and also to make Malayalam language compulsory tll the fourth standard.

The meeting also discussed the issues related to the local bodies and found out that just one Ombudsman was not sufficient to look into all the affairs of the local bodies. The government should increase the number of Ombudsman, he added.
