India and other East Asian nations to develop renewable energy
Cebu, Jan 15 (UNI) Emphasising that their energy needs were growing rapidly, India and 15 other Asian and Pacific countries today signed a historic accord, committing themselves to make large-scale investments in regional energy infrastructure such as the ASEAN power grid and the Trans ASEAN Gas Pipeline and develop renewable energy sources, including nuclear power.
The 'Cebu Declaration On East Asia Energy Security' said these countries decided to reduce dependence on conventional fuels and mitigate greenhouse emissions, contributing to abatement in Global climate change.
The declaration was signed at the 2nd East Asia Summit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders of the 15 other nations--ten ASEAN countries and their dialogue partners Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.
In his brief remarks, Dr Singh told the meeting that it was important to expedite the process of putting in place a regional architecture for greater cooperation and economic integration among countries of East Asia.
