Heavy rush at Tamil Nadu temples on 'Pongal'

Tirumala, Jan 15: The Lord Sri Venkateswara temple today witnessed heavy rush on the occasion of 'Pongal', the traditional harvest festival celebrated with gaeity in the agrarian state of Tamil Nadu.

A large number of devotees thronged various important temples to offer prayers and seek blessings on the occasion of commencement of the auspicious Tamil month of "Thai".

Special "Poojas" and "Abhishekams" were arranged at all temples to mark the occasion.

In view of the heavy rush, Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams(TTD) had decided to cancel booking for "Suprabhatam", "Archana", "Tomala", "Archanana Anthana Darshan", "Nijapada Darshan" and "Arjita Sevas" from today to Jan 21, TTD sources said.

The rituals connected with the Pongal begins early morning with rice being cooked in a new earthern pot in every home.

The sweet "Pongal", which is sugarcane cooked vegetables and fruits was offered to the "Sun God" on the day.

The famous "Maattu Pongal" (Pongal for cows) would be celebrated tomorrow throughout the state.

The cows are donned with sandal, turmeric, Kumkum and are offered Pongal to seek blessings.
