Ranchi, Jan 15 (UNI) The doctors appointed on a contract basis in Jharkhand today went on a mass leave after their demand to regularise their job was not approved by the state government.

Dr Vimlesh Singh, president of Jharkhand Contract Doctors Association (JCDA), said all the doctors of state appointed on a contract basis would join their agitation, which would continue till the government appointed them on regular payroll.

Meanwhile, state secretary of Indian Medical Association Amar Kumar said the state needed about 7800 doctors but now only 3365 doctors were working on contract basis.

Mr Kumar said their contract period would end in February and only 2207 doctors would remain in service.

He said 2468 doctors were appointed on contract but many of them left their job as their service was not regularised leaving only 1158 to the job.

Mr Kumar had urged the state government to consider their demand so that people did not suffer due to the agitation.
