Congress to extend issue-based support to BJP-SAD Mayor

Chandigarh, Jan 15 (UNI) Congress which lost the post of Mayor to the BJP-SAD alliance, has decided to extend issue-based support to the BJP-led alliance.

Union Minister of State for Finance and local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal today said congress would extend support on few issues raised by the BJP in its manifesto.

He said the Congress would cooperate on issue like withdrawal of paid parking, abolition of property tax, changes in building by-laws, identity cards of foothpath workers, abolition of capitation fee, new policy on liquor vends, constitution of a body like Lok Pal to check corruption in corporation and others issues related to people.

Mr Bansal said,''Despite more in number, we will play the role of an active Opposition in the corporation.'' In the recetly held elections, the congress had won 13 seats, the SAD-BJP alliance secured 8, four were taken by CVM and one went to the BSP. But the BJP-Akali Dal candidate Harjinder Kaur was elected the mayor of Chandigarh by defeating Congress candidate Anu Chatrath by a single vote.

Out of the nine nominated members, eight cast their vote as one was not present in the house.
