BJP to rope in actors and Central leaders for Punjab campaign
Chandigarh, Jan 15 (UNI) In the absence of charismatic and vote-catching leaders, the state BJP will be heavily banking upon its electoral ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Parkash Singh Badal and Central leadership to woo the voters for the coming Punjab Assembly elections on February 13.
Besides 23 Assembly seats, the BJP will also contest the prestigious Amritsar Parliamentary seat that was vacated by its leader and cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu following his conviction in a 19-year-old road-rage case on December six.
Apart from the Central leadership, the BJP will also rope in a host of film and television stars including Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Smriti Irani and even Dara Singh, whose native village falls in Amritsar district for the campaign. The party's three-time MP from Gurdaspur and cinestar Vinod Khanna will also be there to help the BJP in his Parliamentary constituency.
The campaign and other related matters came up at a meeting of the state party unit, which was held here today under the chairmanship of its BJP chief Avinash Rai Khanna. Fifteen of the party candidates, whose names had been finalised for the polls, were also present at the meeting.
