Ramesh assures re-opening of border trade

Itanagar, Jan 14(UNI) The Centre will give utmost importance on reviving border trades with neighbouring countries like China and Myanmar by opening more trade routes in near future to boost the economy of Arunachal Pradesh, according to Union Minister of State for Trade and Commerce Jairam Ramesh.

Inaugurating the second phase of on-going Siang River Festival at Yiongkiong in Upper Siang district yesterday, Mr Ramesh said that high priority would be given to re-open traditional Kepang La Pass near Sandak under Tuting circle in the district, informed official sources. The Centre is giving special emphasis on reviving border trades between India and Myanmar along Pangsau Pass. Proper infrastructure, though was yet to be developed because of various constraints like difficult terrains, roads etc but central government is absolutely serious about promoting border trade between the two Asian giants, he said.

He said the Centre had already approved opening of trade route between India and Bhutan at Lumla sector of Tawang district with Tashi Yangtze district in Bhutan.

While reiterating the trade and commerce ministry's pledge to develop infrastructure through release of funds, approval of various schemes and projects for making traditional points functional, he hailed the people of Arunachal Pradesh, who stood tall in times of national crisis amidst all adversities on all occasions. ''People of this frontier state have always set a unique example of diversity. The very fact that people of this multi-lingual state have always co-existed in peace and harmony, sets a unique example before the rest of the countrymen,'' the minister commented. The Minister also warned the neighbouring countries not to indulge in any adventure for or think of any territorial claim over Arunachal, the integral part of India.

No country can claim any part of India. The country is strong enough to foil such designs. It will pass as bad dream to remain in such illusion for our big neighbour, he added.

The minister is scheduled to inaugurate the third phase of the festival at Mechuka in West Siang district today, sources added.
