BSF shots dead a Bangladeshi miscreant

Barrackpore, Jan 14 (UNI) The Border Security Force shot and killed a Bangladeshi at Uttarpara near Ghojadnga in North 24 Parganas, police said.

The BSF opened fire to prevent a gang of smugglers with cattle when they were allegedly crossing the Indo-Bangladesh Border early yesterday.

The BSF firing, incidentally, provoked its counterpart BDR in Bangladesh to counter with four rounds of firing. The BSF too had fired four rounds altogether, a BSF source said.

Others gang members had managed to cross the border, the source added.

BSF, however, recovered the body of a 40-year-old Bangladeshi and handed it over to the police at Basirhat, police said.

Meanwhile, the BSF has intensified vigil along the international border in North 24 Parganas to prevent intrusion from across the border following promulgation of emergency in Bangladesh, a BSF official said at Ghojadanga.
