New Delhi, Jan 14 (UNI) Assocham has mooted a proposal to the Central government to consider providing a Rs 30,000 crore package to Uttar Pradesh for infrastructure development and strengthening the state's law and order situation.

Deteriorating law and order, coupled with repetition of extortion cases in quick successions in Uttar Pradesh have tarnished its image and severely affected economic growth and if not arrested, may go the Bihar way, the chamber said.

''The proposed package should be used with direct monitoring from the Planning Commission for setting up a good number of power plants in the state and revive over 100 state undertakings in the area of textiles and other manufacturing segments,'' suggested Assocham.

In a paper on the revival of UP, it has stated that with bad law and order situation continuing and going unchecked in different parts of the state, the industrial units located in it are planning to shift away to better locations.

Power shortage and increasing transmission and distribution losses have curtailed UP's industrial growth by about 2.5 per cent and accelerated the cost of industrial inputs to the extent of nearly 5 per cent, apart from worsening law and order situation in the last two-and-half years.

Apart from power and textile, the other sectors that are in shambles include the states highways, roads and bridges, rural roads, irrigation, social infrastructure like education, health, drinking water and sanitation and rural development and therefore the package should be utilised to rebuild the above with direct monitoring from the Planning Commission, the paper added.
