Guwahati, Jan 14 (UNI) The Army expanded counter-insurgency operation in lower Asom today and picked up three Bodo militants when they had gone for extortion.

According to official sources, the Bodo militants - Manipal Narzary, Gohin Basumatary and Hengla Basumatary - belonged to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), on ceasefire with the Centre.

Army sources informed they had violated the ceasefire guidelines and were caught when they were attempting extortion. Three pistols, one of Italian maks, were recovered besides 30 rounds of ammunition.

All of them were arrested from Bishmuri area of the Kokrajhar district.

Meanwhile, the Army continued their ''Operation Clear'' in the entire upper Asom but were tightlipped about its success. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is arriving on Tuesday for a day's visit.

Ahead of Dr Singh's visit the state government said if ULFA continued its reign of terror in the state it would be forced to act in a manner it had avoided so far. It also hinted that the banned militant outfit was possibly acting at the dictates of a ''foreign power''.

Meanwhile, security forces had not attached any weightage to ULFA's threatening that they would target the Congress. '' This is joke. As they are on run they are trying to delay the inevitable.

What is new to the threat? They have always targeted the non- complying politicians, '' said a senior intelligence officer.

The Congress too was not giving much importance to ULFA's threat.

''We have lost two Prime Ministers already in the hands of terrorists. We are ready for more sacrifice. But we must defeat the militancy in Asom for the state, '' said state Congress president Bhubaneshwar Kalita.
