Advani welcomes SC verdict on 9th Schedule

Chennai, Jan 14 (UNI) The opposition and senior BJP leader L K Advani today welcomed the recent Supreme Court verdict that all legislations incorporated in ninth schedule of the Constitution after 1973 could be subject to judicial scrutiny.

Talking to media here, he said ''this verdict will attribute more clarity and stability to the intention of the Consitution makers.'' ''This would also deter the government from being dictated by 'party interest' and concentrate on 'national interest'', he added.

Mr Advani said the judiciary had struck down proposals to introduce reservation based on religion, both in the case of Aligarh Muslim University and the Andhra Pradesh government.

''But with the justice Sachar Committee report stating that Muslims were not being given their due in society, a new impetus had been given to talks on passing a law for reservation based on religion and even incorporating in the ninth schedule'', he said.
