Congress seeks Farm loan waiver before Feb '07

Hubli, Jan 13: Senior congress leader and former minister HVishwanath today urged Karnataka government to come out with anotification before February One on waiver of all farm loans, as perthe statement of chief minister H D Kumarswamy.

Talking to newsmen here, he said it's a serious issue and by suchstatements the rural economy would be demolished if a notification tothis effect was not issued immediately. Otherwise the state wouldwitness serial suicides by the farmers and the depositors of the bankshe claimed.

There were over 21,000 cooperative institutions and the recoveryrate has fallen to Four per cent. And if the Chief Minister himselfassure that the loans would be waived, no farmer, including thosecapable of repaying would pay a single paise to the banks, he said.

Mr Vishwanath said such popular statements usually come out ofpoliticians when the elections were round the corner. ''I think it's aploy to avoid Mr B S Yadiyurappa becoming chief minister and go topolls,'' he said and accused former prime minister H D Deve Gowda beingbehind such statements by Mr Kumarswamy.
