Dr Fakhruddin caretaker head of Bangladesh

Dhaka, Jan 12 (UNI) Former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed was sworn-in as Chief Advisor of the interim caretaker government at Bangabhaban this evening.

President Iajuddin Ahmed administered the oath of office to Dr Ahmed at 1900 hrs, a day after he declared a state of emergency and stepped down as head of the caretaker government.

Dr Ahmed will now appoint nine advisors of the caretaker government to oversee the general elections.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and leaders of her alliance attended the ceremony at the Darbar Hall, but BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia did not turn up.

Sixty seven-year-old Fakhruddin Ahmed started his career as a teacher.

Later, he joined the Civil Service of Pakistan and served the government in various capacities until 1978. He held senior positions in the World Bank from 1978 to 2001 before joining Bangladesh Bank.
