SAD-BJP candidate Harjinder Kaur elected Chandigarh Mayor

Chandigarh, Jan 11 (UNI) The BJP-Akali Dal candidate Harjinder Kaur today defeated Congress candidate Anu Chatrath by a single vote to become the Mayor of Chandigarh.

Ms Kaur polled 17 votes against 16 votes secured by Ms Chatrath in the straight contest held at the first meeting of newly-formed, Congress dominated Chandigarh Municipal Corporation having effective strength of 33 members, nine of them nominated.

Only eight nominated members were present in the meeting. The election in ward no seven had been countermanded following the death of a candidate.
