Cong clears names of 60 candidates for Manipur

New Delhi, Jan 11 (UNI) The Central Election Committee(CEC) of the Congress, headed by party President Sonia Gandhi, today finally cleared all the candidates for the 60 Assembly seats in Manipur, which will go to the polls in three phases beginning February 8.

The meeting, held at the official residence of Mrs Gandhi, was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Minister and CWC member in charge of the North Eastern States Oscar Fernandes and Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

Earlier, the Screening Committee of the party shortlisted the names of candidates as forwarded by the Pradesh Election Committee for the final selection by the CEC.

According to AICC General Secretary incharge of Punjab Janardan Dwivedi, the meeting of the Screening Committee for Punjab, which is going to Assembly elections on February 13, will be held here tomorrow to shortlist the candidates for final selection to be made by the CEC.

The Screening Committee for Punjab includes Mrs Mohsina Kidwai as Convenor, Mr Janardan Dwivedi as AICC General Secretary Incharge, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and PCC President Shamsher Singh Dullo.
