Cong accuses TDP for politicising clemency

Hyderabad, Jan 11 (UNI) The Congress today criticised the opposition TDP for politicising the power of clemency enjoyed by the President and state Governors.

In a statement here, Congress Spokesperson N Tulasi Reddy said the previous TDP Government had released Subba Rao on May 22, 1996, Chenna Reddy on May 5, 1996, P Lakshmi and B Lakshmamma on Jan 20, 2002 and Vasudeva Rao on February 20, 2004 under the Constitutional provisions of granting clemency.

The President of India could offer clemency under Article 72 of the Indian Constitution and the Governor could do so under the Article 161, he claimed.

He also said the state government had similar power under sub-section 1 of section 432 of the CrPc of 1973.

Mr Tulasi Reddy alleged that the opposition TDP was making a mountain out of a mole hill, by opposing the release of Congress leader Gouru Venkata Reddy who was released as per the provisions of the Constitution and the law of the land, charging the Congress of favouritism.
