We will move HC on order permitting "Jallikattu": Maneka

Chennai, Jan 10 (UNI) Animal Welfare activist and MP Maneka Gandhi today said animal welfare organisations would move Madras High Court, challenging the Madurai Bench's order permitting ''Jallikattu'' as part of the Pongal festival at Alanganallur.

Talking to reporters here on the sidelines of fourth 'Asia for Animals Conference', she said '' I cannot understand on what grounds the judge permitted the 'Jallikattu', which was not only a cruelty on animals, but also on human beings. We will approach Madras High Court seeking a ban on the order.'' On selling of exotic varieties of dogs by foreign tourists arriving in India, she said though laws were framed to ban entry of dogs to India, the Commerce Ministry under Kamal Nath charged the law, stating that tourists with pets would be allowed and this increased the arrival of dogs to India manifold. About 20,000 'Uzbeki' dogs are brought and sold in Delhi.

She also came down heavily on the police, who support illegal slaughter houses and animal traffickers.
