Usha Rani claims gold in Foil

Bangalore, Jan 10 (UNI) Manipur sabers dominated the picture, with Usha Rani claiming the gold in women's foil and Chingsomba storming into the finals of the men's saber individual event in the 17th Senior National Fencing Championship here today.

Usha, who had represented the country a number of times, gave a dazzling performance, winning the gold in Women's Foil with much ease. In an one-sided final, Usha thrashed Swetha of Maharashtra 15-2. Poornima of Karnataka won the bronze, defeating Karamjith of Punjab.

Earlier, in the semifinal, Usha overcame stiff challenge from Poornima winning the contest 15-13, while Swetha had overpowered Karamjith 15-6.

In the men's section, Chingsomba defeated Manpreet Singh of Punjab 15-7 to storm into the title round from Pool B. In the other pool, Ujjal Gupta showcased his fine talent by making it to the final, defeating K Oplen of Assam 15-8.
