Prasanna is new Deputy Mayor of VMC

Vijayawada, Jan 10 (UNI) Ms A Prasanna of the Congress was elected as the Deputy Mayor of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) here today.

The election was conducted at the Council Hall of the VMC by Returning Officer and Krishna District Collector Navin Mittal amid high drama after First Division Corporator Venkata Satyanarayana's nomination was witheld by the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on the grounds he was a rowdy-sheeter.

After the issue was brought to light by a Telugu daily and a private channel, the APCC witheld Mr Satyanarayana's nomination for the post.

After a marathon meeting held by the city Congress leaders this morning to decide another corporator name for the post on the directions of the APCC, the Congress decided to nominate Mr Prasanna for the post.

The election was necessiated after Deputy Mayor of the Congress C H Krishna Kumar tendered his resignation on December ten last year.

As per an agreement, the city Congress would elect new leaders for the posts every year to give a chance to other corporators in the 59-member council.

The mayor's post, too, was being given in rotation among the corporators.
