Bangkok, Jan 10: Jet Airways will begin direct flights linking the Thai capital with Delhi and Calcutta starting January 23, Jet chairman Naresh Goyal told a press conference here.

The carrier will operate 14 flights a week from Delhi and Calcutta to Thailand using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

There are plans to use Airbus A330 planes on the Delhi-Bangkok route next year.

Jet will be the first Indian private carrier to fly to Thailand after both countries agreed last year to allow private airlines to start operations and to step up airline seat capacity to 10,000 passengers per week.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Deputy Governer Surapol Sawetseranee told the press conference yesterday that 370,000 Indians visited Thailand in 2006, 18 per cent more than the preceding year.
