HC quashes proceedings against underworld don Arun Gawli

Mumbai, Jan 10 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today quashed proceedings in an extortion case filed by Mumbai police against underworld don-turned-politician Arun Gawli.

Gawli, an MLA from Chinchpokli area of the metropolis, was granted relief by Justice S C Dharmadhikari on a petition filed by the don, following an extortion case registered against him by the police in 1991, on a complaint made by Shaikh Ahmed, an employee of a city-based builder.

According to the complaint, Shaikh was kidnapped by two unidentified persons and taken to Dagdi chawl, where he was threatened and asked to tell his employer to cough up Rs four lakhs as protection money.

While challenging the proceedings of the Sessions Court, Gawli pleaded that since he was not named in the First Information Report (FIR), proceedings against him should be squashed.
