Election dept completes 89 per cent photo IC

Agartala, Jan 10 (UNI) The Tripura Election Department sources today said they have issued electorate photo identity card (EPIC) to 89 per cent of the electorate till January 7.

There are 21,02,349 electorate in the state of which only 14,34,581 had been issued EPIC till 2003.

The ongoing EPIC campaign would continue till Januray 31, sources said.

The District Magistrate's reports said that 4,34,479 non-EPIC voters in the entire 60 Assembly constituencies were photographed till January 7.

The department had covered 18,69,060 of the total 21,02,349 electorate during this ongoing EPIC campaign, sources added.

Initiatives were also taken to prepare error free Photo Electoral Rolls of the constituencies. A check list of photo rolls with the EPIC had also been generated and printed.

Production of I-Cards at the polling station would be made compulsory in the next general Assembly election.

The department had urged all the political parties, leaders and NGOs to cooperate while issuing error free Identitiy Card and preparing electoral rolls with the photographs of the voters, sources said.
