DMK agri-wing plans demo on linking south rivers

Tiruchirapalli, Jan 10: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) agriculture wing will stage demonstrations in front of the Central Government offices in all the district headquarters on January 19, to create awareness on the need to link southern rivers.

Talking to newspersons here last night after chairing a meeting of the state and district office-bearers of the agriculture wing of the party, state secretary of the agriculture wing K P Ramalingam said a resolution to this effect was adopted at the meeting.

The meeting also decided to invite all the farmers associations to participate in the demonstrations to sensitise the peasants and public on the benefits of linking the rivers in south India.

In another resolution the meeting strongly condemned the Kerala Government for its disinformation campaign on the Mullaiperiyar dam issue and its failure to settle the matter amicably by implementing the Supreme Court verdict.

The meeting requested Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to recommend to the Central Government to waive the crop loans sanctioned by the commericial banks. It also urged private sugar mills to disburse the arrears to cane growers immediately.
