Cong watching situation in UP: Gehlot
New Delhi, Jan 10 (UNI) The Congress today appeared to be adopting a 'wait and watch' policy with regard to developments in Uttar Pradesh following Chief Minister Mulayam Singh's insistence on convening the Assembly to take a confidence vote in the wake of the resignations of Ministers belonging to the RLD.
''We are keeping in touch and closely watching the situation,'' AICC General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh Ashok Gehlot said talking to mediapersons here.
''We will take the right decision at the right moment,'' Mr Gehlot said, adding if the situation demanded the party would take a decision on withdrawal of support to the Mulayam Singh Government.
However, Mr Gehlot, in reply to a question, made it clear that the Congress was opposing the Samajawadi Party Government both within the Assembly and outside. He pointed out that the Congress had extended support to the Mulayam Government to keep the communal forces at bay.
Mr Gehlot reiterated that the UP Government must go as the law and order in the state had broke down as evident by incidents like the Nithari killings.
Replying to a question, Mr Gehlot expressed the view that once a notification for prorogation of the Assembly had been issued, it was not possbile to convene the Assembly without a 15-day notice for the same.
