Adopt WiMAX for rural penetration: Prof Paulraj

New Delhi, Jan 10: To tap the potential of rural area in telecom sector, India should go for WiMAX Mobile Broadband Technology, Stanford University Professor A Paulraj said today.

''India must adopt WiMAX Mobile Broadband Technology for its rural telephony as it has no security weaknesses and suits best to connect rural India with that of urban,'' Professor Paulraj, one of the pioneers of WiMAX technology, told reporters here at a conference on 'WiMAX Technology for Mobile Broadband and Mobile VoIP Services' organised by Assocham.

Professor Paulraj added that large companies such as Intel, Motorola, Airtel, Nokia will adopt 16 equipment technology like that of WiMAX for spreading broadband services in metros and large township.

The smaller companies in telecom sectors will also adopt laying fixed telephone lines because of smaller investments in it.

He said the future of telecom industry and its growth will depend on WiMAX as the system has in it all the waves to take on security threats.

Speaking on the occasion, Intel Managing Director (South Asia) Ramamurthy Sivakumar said his company will continue to work towards increasing its presence in India, particularly in large towns and sub-urban areas to capture the market size as telecom industry has already moved on to great heights.
