Sr National Judo tourney in Vijayawada from Jan 11

Vijayawada, Jan 9 (UNI) The five-day senior national judo championship will be held at the DRM corporation indoor stadium here from January 11.

Nearly 600 players from 29 states would take part in the tourney, Krishna District Collector and Organising Committee President Navin Mittal informed at a press conference here last night.

Apart from 30 teams, seven departmental teams from Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, All India Police Sports Control Board, Railway Sports Promotion Board, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Services Sports Control Board would be seen in action in the championship.

Organised by the Judo Federation of India, State Judo Association and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, the events would be held in eight men and women categories each, he said adding the championship would be held under the knock-out basis.

Stating that 'anti-doping' tests would be conducted on the players during the tournament, Mr Mittal warned that disciplinary action would be initiated against any player found taking drugs.

The national team for the forthcoming South-Asian Judo championship to be held at Hyderabad in November would be selected during the tourney. About 25 countries would take part in it, he added.

He said the World Military Judo championship would be held from October 14 to 21 at Hyderabad, in which 69 countries would participate.
