Shops remained closed in Kerala in response to hartal call

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 9 (UNI) Shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in Kerala today in response to the call for a dawn-to-dusk hartal given by the Kerala Samsthana Vyapari- Vyavasayi Samithi to protest the continued police raid on video CD libraries in the state.

Reports from various parts of the state said that the hartal was almost total.

Medical shops and hotels had been exempted from the hartal.

The traders took out marches to the office of the Director-General of Police and the State Secretariat here.

A report from Kozhikode said major trade centres there remained closed in response to the call for hartal.

The traders took out a march to the office of the Inspector-General at Nadakkavu.

Police said the hartal was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.
