Seers oppose serving of eggs in noon meal scheme

Hubli, Jan 9 (UNI) Religious heads in Karnataka today opposed serving eggs under the mid-day meal scheme to school students and threatened to launch a Statewide agitation if the State Government failed to withdraw its order forthwith.

Addressing a press conference here, Pejawar mutt seer Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji, Murusavir mutt seer Gurusiddarajyogindra Swamiji, Basavadhrmagnyana peeth seer Dayanand Swamiji and other seers described the Government's move as an attempt to divide the society and maintained that school children should get nutritious food and not non-vegetarian food.

When a delegation of seers called on Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, it was assured that eggs would not be served in the noon meal. But a Government Order was issued later, directing the officials to provide egg in the noon meals, they alleged.

They said a meeting of seers, including that of Siddaganga mutt and Dharmasthala chief Veerendra Heggade, had been convened in Bangalore and the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have been invited to attend the meeting.

The seers also wanted the Government not to go ahead with its plan of setting up modern slaughter houses, stating that it would lead to killing more animals to maintain the abattoirs.
