Kolkata, Jan 9 (UNI) With the Nandigram turmoil refusing to die down, a group of suspected Naxalites held a snap demonstration in the premises of the CPI(M) state headquarters in the city today protesting the acquisition of land for industries.

Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee said the demonstrators, most of them students, were suspected to be members of Naxalite outfits.

He said altogether 11 members, who demonstrated under the banner of ''Chhatra Samhati Mancha'', had been arrested.

The demonstrators, most of whom were from Jadavpur University, Presidency College and Rabindra Bharati University, suddenly appeared in front of the CPI(M) office at Alimuddin Street in central Kolkata and started shouting slogans. They also tried to force entry inside the office and put up few posters on the walls of the building.

A section of the crowd rushed to the nearby office of 'Ganashakti, the Bengali mouthpiece of the CPI(M) to stage a demonstration and tried to burn an effigy of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

However, policemen posted near the CPI(M) office and the local people chased the demonstrators and got hold of few of them.

According to party sources, CPI(M) state committee Secretary Biman Basu alerted the district units against any such demonstration.

A group of students claiming to be members of a Naxalite outfit, damaged a Tata Motors show room in the city last month in protest against taking over agricultural land at Singur for the proposed small car project.
