New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) The Congress today termed as a "sinking ship" the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in Uttar Pradesh and said many ministers and MLAs of the Samajwadi Party would desert him by the time the Assembly elections approached.

Reacting to the reports of resignations by the Ministers belonging to the Rashtriya Lok Dal in the state, AICC General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh Ashok Gehlot said this was just the beginning. By the time the Assembly elections approached many more Ministers and MLAs would severe their ties with the Government and the Samajwadi Party."Nobody likes to remain in a sinking ship." Mr Gehlot said it was long being talked about that the Ministers belonging to Mr Ajit Singh's party would quit the state government and eventually they had taken this step. It would have been better if the step had been taken earlier.

He refused to comment on the possibility of the Congress reaching a poll understanding with Mr Ajit Singh, but said many smaller parties in the state were in touch with his party. The party would take decision on alliance after talking to them.

Stating that the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government had failed on all fronts, he said the people of the state wanted to get rid of Mr Yadav. Kidnappings and dacoities had become an order of the day and the law and order situation had completely broken down.

Referring to Nithari incident he said this would remain a stigma on Mr Yadav for ever. Payment of compensation and allotment of land to victims could not wash away the sins, he added.
