Intl symposium on Speech and Music begins

Mysore, Jan 9: A two-day international symposium 'Frontiers of Research on Speech and Music' (FRSM 2007) is taking place at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) here.

The symposium, organised jointly by the ITC Sangeeth Research Academy, Kolkata, and C V Raman Centre for Physics and Music, Jadhavpur University, Kolkata, was inaugurated yesterday by internationally famous musician and veteran playback singer Dr H S Anasuya Kulkarni.

Speaking on the occasion, she said Indian music had raga and melody and it was made divine by vedic chanting. The raga system orginated in the Rigveda period. Vedic chanting required correct voice modulation, practicing which one could develop concentration, clear pronunciation and rhythm. Light music and devotional songs were appreciated by the masses due to its simple language and melody,'' she said.

The special theme of the symposium was acoustics of speech and music. A total of 67 papers would be presented in the symposium, which is being attended by over 100 delegates from Mumbai, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram and abroad.
