Guwahati, Jan 9 (UNI) The Assam State Council of the CPI has strongly condemned the barbaric killing of the innocent Hindi speaking workers in the districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji and Sibsagar by insurgents.

''The Asom government has failed to protect the lives and properties of the people of the state and must accept the responsibility for the unfortunate killings,'' Assam State Council of CPI Secretary Drupad Borgohain said in a statement here today.

''The extremist and terrorist groups, involved in these barbaric killing, must be identified and punished, whoever they might be,'' the statement said.

It said the forces involved in such an inhuman crime might have two objectives. ''They want to stall the process of political dialogue between the Union Government and the ULFA leadership and create a division between the Assamese and Hindi speaking people for narrow interests,'' it said.

''We hope that all sections of the people of the state, political parties and organisations should now rise to the occasion and jointly condemn these barbaric killings,'' Mr Borgohin said in the statement.

The CPI has urged the Centre to call a meeting of all political parties of the state to discuss the ''grave'' situation in the state and find out a common solution.
