4 file papers in Amravati, 1 in Akola for civic polls

Nagpur, Jan 9 (UNI) Four candidates today filed their nominations for the forthcoming February 1 civic elections to the Amravati Municipal Corporation, while one did so in Akola on the second day for filing of nominations.

Official sources said four candidates, all independents, submitted five sets of nomination papers in Amravati. A total of 373 nomination forms were sold here today, which has 81 wards, they added.

In Akola, only one independent candidate today filed his nomination for the civic polls there, officials said.

The last date for filing nominations at both places, Amravati and Akola, is January 15. The deadline for withdrawals is January 19.

Meanwhile, the BJP today released the first list of 17 candidates which it will field in these elections.

The list was released by the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Mr Pandurang Phundkar, Akola MP Mr Sanjay Dhotre and others.

The BJP is contesting from 33 wards of the total 71, leaving aside 22 for it's ally, the Shiv Sena. No final decision has yet been made regarding the remaining 16, BJP sources said.
