UP awaits CBI's acceptance to take up Nithari probe

Lucknow, Jan 8 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh government is awaiting the acceptance by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take up the Nithari serial killings case.

According to official sources here, although the state government had already wrriten to the CBI to take up the case, it is yet to receive any acceptance from the central sgency.

''The procedure may take a few days as offices have opened after weekend,'' sources clarified.

Since law and order is a state subject, the UP government will notify the Nithari case being handed over to the CBI, after it receives the letter of acceptance.

The letter recommending CBI probe was written on Saturday itself.

Cornered by the opposition and Raj Bhawan, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday night agreed to separate CBI probes in the Nithari serial killings and the alleged murder of Meerut University ad hoc lecturer Kavita Rani Chaudhury.

''I have taken the decision to order CBI probe after Governor T V Rajeshwar wrote to me a letter for it (Nithari case)...the opposition is also playing politics on bodies of victims,'' he said.

Addressing a hurriedly convened news conference at his official residence here, Mr Yadav said the decision for CBI probe was also suggested by his officials.

The CM announced a residential plot for each victim's family of Nithari incident, besides considering a demand for government jobs.
