Mizoram villagers soft towards Tipaimukh

Aizawl, Jan 8: With the assurance of rehabilitation from NorthEastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), villagers in Mizoram sideof surrounding areas of 1500 MW Tipaimukh multipurpose hydel powerproject have melt down from the opposition against the dam.

NEEPCO officials here today said Hmar-Christian community who hadearlier been opposing the project has adopted soft attitude while theCentre assured compensation to the affected people of about 90 villages.

The officials said the Affected People's Association of Tipaimukhrecently met Union Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises ministerSontosh Mohan Dev and promised to help the project get off the ground.But they demanded that the tribals from both Mizoram and Manipur, to beaffected by this project, be given priority for non-technical jobs inthe hydel project, the officials added.

However, uncertainty still looms large on the project with fourmajor Manipur insurgent groups opposing the construction of the damciting the view that Rs 6,800-crore project would exploit the naturalresources, environment and cultural identities of the tribal villagers.
