Panaji, Jan 8 (UNI) Maharastra and Karnataka stole the limelight with eight and seven golds respectively on the first day of the 52nd Aquatic National school games held at Campal's swimming complex here today.

Tamil Nadu and Gujarat won 2 each, while Punjab, Goa and Manipur had to be content with one gold each.

In all, Goa bagged three medals -- a gold and a bronze in diving, and a silver in swimming.

In all, five new meet records were set today in swimming (three by Karnataka and two by Maharastra).

Aaron A D'Souza from Karnataka in 400 mt free style U-17 (boys) finished with new meet record at a timing of 4:16:51 seconds, erasing his team colleague Rohit H's 2003 record timing of 4:22:02 seconds.

In the 400 mts free style boys U-19, Rohit Havaldhar imporved his new meet record with a new timing of 4:13:72 seconds. His earlier timing was 4:17:46 secs.

In the 200 mts back stroke girls U-17, Sameeksha Alva of Karnataka made a new meet record with a timing of 02:33:44, effacing her team colleague Rariha Zmar's record timing of 02:36:23.

Maharashtra's Yashodan Lonkar in the 100 mts breast stroke boys under-19 made a new meet record with a timing of 01:09:75. Earlier recrod was 01:11:00 by Arjun J P of Karnatka and in the 100 mts breast stroke girls U-17, Maharastra's Poorva Shetye made a new record with a timing of 01:22:82, beating her team mate Krunal Bhosle's record of 01:25: 00.

Maharastra's gold medalists in swimming: Kevin Bora, Yashodhan Lonkar, Shardul Walimbe (all boys); Arti Ghorpade, Deepa Sudame, Poorva Shetye and Kavya Bhandarkar (all girls) and Rupali B Shinde (diving).

Karnataka's gold medalists in swimming: Aaron A D'Souza, Rohit R Havldhar and Poorna Chandra (all boys); Pooja R Alva, Meghana Gupta, Sameeksha S Alva (all girls) and Karishma M Mohite (diving).

Tamil Nadu's gold medalists swiming: M B Balkrishnan (boys) and Gulnaz Rawoof (girls).

Gujarat's gold medalists swiming: Umesh Kumar and Ravi Kumar both (boys).

Punjab gold medalists: Swiming Mankiran Kour (girls) and Goa's Rahul Soman (diving) and S Rabikumar Singh (Manipur).
