Bengal Bandh supporters rasnsack SEB offices

Kolkata, Jan 8 (UNI) A gang of Bangla Bandh supporters today ransacked the main supply office of West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) at Santipur in Nadia District and tried to snatch the cash box after damaging furniture and several computes.

Official sourcers here said shouting anti-government slogans about 12 hooligans raided the WBSEB office at around 15 00 hours and started ransacking the building. They also threatened the employees with dire consequences for attending the office ignoring the opposition sponsored bandh call.

Suddenly some of the miscreants tried to snatch the cashbox from the office before fleeing in a melee. But thanks to the resitance from some of the WBSEB employees they could not do so and left the building after damaging some more furniture and electronic gadgets.

The total loss of government property was estimated to the tune of more than Rs 10 lakhs, the sources added.

Later police arrived on the sopt and lodged a case against the unidentifed miscreants. A strong posse of armed police was also posted near the WBSEB office to prevent any recurrence of violence.

Meanwhile, the incident has created panic among the WBSEB workers who also blamed the police for failing to provide adequate security when required.

Reports of vandalism and destruction of government property by bandh supporters in several other areas have also poured in.
