'Rahul's rise is violative of democratic ideal'

New Delhi, Jan 7: Hinting at the prominence accorded to Rahul Gandhi in ruling Congress, BJP stalwart and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani today said concept of dynastic leadership is violative of democratic ideal.

Speaking here on 'Leadership' at the Rotary Conference, Mr Advani said, ''The concept of dynastic leadership, which we unfortunately are seeing in certain parties in our contry, is therefore, deeply violative of both the democratic ideal and the spirit of the modern times.'' True leadership is earned and not commanded or demanded. History is replete with examples that show that great leaders, who gained the respect of people not only during but also beyond their lifetime, were least self-conscious about the leadership role they were playing, he said the august gathering.

Expressing his anguish over the present-day situation, Mr Advani said there had been progressive erosion in political culture in the country.

Lust for power, misuse of power for personal ends, corruption, emasculation of institutions, factionalism and indiscipline in political parties, apathy towards people's welfare had replaced the high ideals that once inspired people to enter the political profession, he added.

He said India could not have achieved the kind of success that had been seen in many fields today, but for many people showing excellent leadership in their respective fields.

''In practically every sphere- indeed, more in other spheres than in politics - we see individuals who are providing excellent leadership,'' he said.
