Jeev to spearhead Indian challenge in Dubai Desert Classic

Dubai, Jan 7 (UNI) Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa and Shiv Kapur are set to provide a taste of 'Incredible India' on the greens when they compete against a stellar line-up spearheaded by Tiger Woods in the Dubai Desert Classic to be played at the Emirates Golf Club from February 1 to 4.

Jeev added a golden chapter in Indian golf when he became the first Indian to enter the top 50 of the official world golf rankings last month after winning the Volvo Masters in Spain and back-to-back titles in Japan.

''It was an uphill battle for me, but I am fortunate enough to be back in the winning circle,'' said Jeev after winning four titles in the just-ended season after claiming his first Asian Tour order of merit title.

His lofty position has guaranteed Jeev an invitation to this year's US Masters, and the three other majors.

''It's been a dream year for me,'' he said.

In Dubai, Jeev, Randhawa and Shiv will also be joined by Emaar-MGF PGTI Championship winner Harmeet Kahlon.

''I think Asians have a lot of talent and that they can play with the best in the world. Playing against some of the top golfers will always be tough, but I have seen Woods playing and have learnt a lot from him,'' said the Indian sensation who was recently conferred the 'Punjab Golf Rattan' award by the Punjab Golf Association in his home town Chandigarh.

''I am looking forward to playing in the Dubai Desert Classic, a tournament which I believe is one of the best-organised events in the world. I know there are a lot of Indians out there in the UAE, who will be keenly watching our progress and all I can say is that we will try and give off our best to ensure they are not disappointed,'' he said.

The organisers of the Dubai Desert Classic were also pleased to welcome back the ace Indian golfers, Jeev, in particular.

''First, I would like to congratulate Jeev for his stunning success. Jeev is a familiar name on our draw and even when he was struggling to break into the winning circle we had invited him to compete in our event. I hope a strong Indian contingent in the field will spice up the flavour of our event and many of their fans will come from India and other places to watch them in action,'' Vice Chairman of golf in Dubai Mohamed Juma Buamaim said.
