New Delhi, Jan 6 (UNI) Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today sought the Centre's immediate intervention in Uttar Pradesh in view of the ''deteriorating law and order situation'' there.

In reply to a question whether he would demand dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Government in the wake of the Nithari case, Mr Vajpayee said, ''We have been demanding for long the Centre's intervention in view of the bad law and order situation in UP.'' Mr Vajpayee was, however, not categorical if he was demanding the dismissal of the Samajwadi government.

The former Prime Minister had gone to the house of Mr Manabendra Shah, a BJP MP from Tehri Garhwal, who died early today.

The BJP has been demanding imposition of President's rule in Uttar Pradesh for total failure of the law and order machinery in the state.

The party feels that the assembly elections in the state, which were due in May, should not be held under the present dispensation as they would not be free and fair.
