Notorious goon from UP arrested in Thane

Thane, Jan 6 (UNI) City police today arrested a notorious criminal who is wanted in Uttar Pradesh.

Sandeep Shambhunath Rai (24) was arrested near a hotel here this afternoon, Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhukar Pandey told an impromptu press conference here. Sandeep Rai is a resident of Sagdi taluka in Azamgadh district of Uttar Pradesh, Mr Pandey said.

At least eight offences, including murder, rioting and dacoity, are registered against Sandeep Rai at various police stations in Uttar Pradesh, he said.

He had fled the state and was hiding at Ghansoli in Navi Mumbai since the last one and half months, he said, adding that the criminal had committed two murders immediately before fleeing his state.

The Uttar Pradesh police had spread a dragnet to nab him and had even announced an award for his capture.

Mr Pandey said a Thane police team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Kashinath Kachre had laid a trap around the Krishnavilas Hotel near here after being tipped off that the goon was likely to reach there with the intention of committing some crime.

He was sighted around 1430 hours and was immediately nabbed. A loaded country-made pistol was recovered from his person, Mr Pandey said.
