Workshop on White-Collar Crime and its prevention

Guwahati, Jan 5 (UNI) In a bid to minimize the growing trend of white collar crimes, the ICICI Bank, in association with the Assam State police, jointly organised a day-long workshop on 'Economic offences&its prevention' here today.

Inaugurating the workshop as chief guest, Director General of Police (DGP) R N Mathur said in view of globalisation and economic liberalisation, it has been observed that frauds in banks and financial institutions was 'not new but has taken a new dimension of cyber crime.' Mr Mathur informed that Assam Police had already taken various measures to tackle such crimes. Anti-corruption and vigilance officers were deputed in all districts to help solve such crimes, he said adding police personnel were being trained to tackle this growing menace.

He said, ''In many cases we found bank officials involved in such crimes.'' Speaking on the occasion Chief Manager, ICICI Bank Gyan Barah stressed on closer interaction of financial institutions with the law enforcement agencies for effective policing of white collar crimes. He also elaborated on how such crimes were becoming increasingly frequent with the potential of making the economy bleed.

ICICI Bank officials outlined far-reaching implications of fraud in the Indian context.

They also elaborated on the typical sources of fraud and emerging profile of fraudulent customers, based on information collaborated from surveys.

The workshop further dissected a variety of crimes committed over the internet. It dealt with a specific section of IPC that can be applicable in various types of frauds. It also discussed case studies of judgments by various courts in this regards.

The scope of fraud under all such loans was illustrated with case studies and the methods used for investigation and bringing the criminals to justice were shown in the workshop through video films.

Earlier the ICICI Bank had organised such workshops at various places in the country.

This was the 35th workshop organised by the bank in conjunction with law enforcement agencies.

The Bank offers an entitle gamut of retail financial products for its customers, covering auto, home and personal loans, credit and debit cards in addition to other banking activities.
